“If you’ve identified the potential presence of bed bugs in your home, it’s important to get help as soon as possible. Many of the home remedies offered aren’t effective at killing all of the bed bugs and can result in a re-infestation.”

Find out if you have bed bugs

The first thing you will need to begin your search for bed bugs is a flashlight. You will also need to be able to pick up and over-turn some furniture (have someone assist you if you need). Bed bugs are not generally out in the open during the daytime. They tend to remain out of site and will be found hiding in cracks & crevices as well as the underside of furniture. This is where a bed bug infestation will begin.

Search for Signs

One of the first signs most people notice is the bites they receive from bed bugs. These bites are often red, itchy and can resemble a mosquito bite. They usually appear in groups or lines, sometimes raised and welt-like. Keep in mind, that sometimes there may be no reaction at all to a bed bug bite, which can allow an infestation to grow out of control when you have no symptoms to warn you.

The second main sign of a bed bug infestation is if you find a bed bug. Even a single bed bug is a good sign that you will need a professional bed bug treatment. As an adult, bed bugs are approximately 1/4″ in size. They will appear black, dark brown, or amber in color and are oval shaped.

The third sign of infestation will be the presence of molted exoskeletons and fecal stains that can be found on furniture near where people rest or sleep. Look for these signs in the cracks and crevices of your mattresses, chairs, box springs, bed frames, pillowcases, and even curtains. Anything made of fabric will be an ideal starting point to search , but keep in mind that they can even get into the framing of a home, inside walls and ceilings too.
